FAQ (FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS)
why should i hire an interior designer ?
Sometimes it’s hard to understand the value of a designer when there seems to be so much on the internet that tells homeowners how to do their own design work. Indeed, you can do it yourself, but a designer will:
- Determine and design the correct sizing of furniture or built-ins and work out the best room layout.
- Offer suggestions or shopping locations you may not have thought of or have heard about.
- Provide valuable time management solutions and eliminate slowdowns in decision making.
- Create more effective communication between you and the contractor.
- Interpret your vision into something achievable.
- Bring experience to the table as well as trades, companies or suppliers that have a good record of service.
- Be a calming presence during what can be a difficult time for some people.
- A designer is your advocate on-site, making sure you get the best space possible. They can often see things that contractors missed or when they cut corners to save money.
How to choose an Interior Designer / Architect / Contractor ?
Don't be shy—you need to make sure if it's the perfect fit!!.
The process of hiring an interior designer can feel like dating. Is it the right match? Are you on the same page? How do you know if your visions align? All of these are common things to ask yourself before putting down a deposit—and taking a bet—on someone who might very well become a friend for life. But if you’ve never gone through the process of using an interior designer before, and you feel unsure, consider flipping the script and interview them.
- How do you decide which projects are a good fit for you and your firm?
- Do you welcome client involvement or do you prefer clients to be hands-off?
- What elements define your style? Where do you find inspiration?
- What do you find most challenging about designing a home or commercial space?
- What is your project-management style like?
- What is an example of a mistake you made on a project, how did you handle it, and what did you learn from it?
- What do you prioritize when planning a budget?
What is Design & Build ?
Design & Build is a more streamlined process of custom home/apartment building/renovation in which our design & contractor team are collaboratively present from concept to completion. These professionals work “under the same roof” to create a unified vision of the project that fits the client’s budget and schedule.
Pricing and scheduling are given more attention in the Design & Build model, creating more efficient processes and significant financial benefits. This approach to custom home building outperforms other models of residential construction on every meaningful metric, including:
Number of change orders
Quality of end product, with reduced rework
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN INTERIOR DESIGNER AND AN INTERIOR DECORATOR?
Interior decorators typically focus on the decorative elements of a home, such as: paint color, furniture, décor, window treatments, bedding etc. Interior designers do this, and more. Designers typically have formal program training. An interior designer should have knowledge of interior architecture principals, drafting skills, general building code guidelines and more.
INTERIOR DESIGN PROCESS: HOW DOES IT WORK?
Our Turnkey (design + construction) service package :
Step one - client consultation
During the programming phase the client's needs and objectives are identified. Questions regarding the specific function(s) of the space, who will be using the space and furniture and equipment requirements will be discussed. Measurements and photos are also taken at this time.
Step two - schematic design
In the schematic design phase, space planning and furniture layouts are developed. Circulation patterns and minimum clearances are considered and applied to the floor plan. Rough sketches and elevations are created, preliminary furniture and finish ideas are developed and then presented to the client for review and revision.
Step three - design development
After final approval of the schematic design, the designer develops floor plans, elevations and other related items in greater detail. Colors and finishes are refined, furniture, fabrics and equipment are selected and cost estimates are prepared. The resulting design is presented to the client for review, revision and final approval.
Step four - construction documentation
In the first phase, the specific details of the work to be completed are documented. These details include woodwork specification, finish selections such as flooring and paint, lighting plans and fixture selection, plumbing location and fixture selection, and electrical layouts in regard to the total scope of work to be completed. In the second phase, bids are obtained, contractors selected, and purchase orders are issued.
Step five - construction administration
This is the final stage where things are built and installed. Our designers and construction team collaborate seasmlessly onsite during "installation" to ensure items are received in good condition, installed correctly, and that documents have been followed properly.
How can i estimate the cost of my project myself ?
Traditional approach: time consuming
It’s easiest to create a budget room by room and then add up each room’s cost for an overall estimate.Generally, things will cost more than you think, after all, when was the last time you bought a sofa or hired a painter? If your house has increased in value, assume the fixtures and furnishings that go into the house will have increased in cost as well!
Go shopping if you don’t know the cost of things. For instance, go to retailers where you would purchase things from; not the cheapest place, remember you’re improving your home. Check out the price and compare different brands & finishes of a sofa, hardwood furniture (tables, etc) and bathroom fixtures. This will give you an idea of how to gauge the cost of things realistically.
